Species:
Equus quagga (Plains Zebra)
Physical Description:
Nova is mid-sized and thick bodied with relatively short legs. She stands at about five feet high at the shoulder, is approximately eight feet long, and weighs about six hundred and forty-six pounds. Like all zebras, she is boldly striped in black and white and she's very proud that no one looks exactly like her.
She has vertical stripes on the forepart of her body, which are horizontal on her hindquarters. Being a strictly northern animal, she has much narrower and defined striping than any of her cousins. Though she sticks out like a sore thumb out in the desert, don't bother pointing that out to her.
Nova is a little bit taller than most zebras, a fact that she is extremely proud of. Though her build does not stray from that normal to her species, she has broad shoulders and an even longer face than most. She is a powerful-looking mare, with muscles and sinew under her striped coat.
Nova has a very intelligent look about her, as she is keenly perceptive to the world around her and takes everything in very quickly. Her eyes, dark in color, are very clear, steady, and have almost a predatory penatration to them. Her sense of sight is very sharp; it's tough to sneak around this girl.
Nova has a tendency to lean her head and shoulders forward when she walks, as if she was being lead about with imaginary horns. She has a very sharp, mean look to her, her facial features being slightly more pointed than most other zebras. But she isn't as bad as she looks.
Personality:
As far as she can tell, there has never been a time in Nova's life that she has doubted herself or her abilities. Call her a name and she'll barely flinch. Fling an attack and she'll fling one right back. Even in the worst of situations, this a mare who will keep thinking that she's going to save the day somehow.
Okay, so you can probably already tell that Nova's a tomboy. Ask her and she'll tell you she's not afraid of anything and, most of the time, that's true. She's a tough equine and has never backed down from a fight. However, there is a fine line between bravery and stupidity and she tends to cross it often.
If there's anything in this world that Nova hates the most, it's waiting for things. When she wants something, she wants it when she wants it and if she doesn't get it soon, chances are someone's head is going to roll. Also, she tends to get bored when kept waiting.
Careful what you talk about with this horse. If you talk about, say, jumping a wide cliff (exaggerated slightly, but hey, you get the idea), she may decide it sounds like fun and will run off right that very minute to go try it. Prone to use brute force during these 'adventures,' she shoots first and asks questions later.
Oh yes, Nova is a very proud creature indeed and has been known to pick fights over the smallest of insults. It's almost impossible not to anger her; her ego is very easily bruised and her honor is extremely vulnerable to attack. Thankfully, her temper is just as quick to disappear as it is to flare up.
History:
Nova was the firstborn of a pair of twins, daughter of two runaways, aptly named Runner and Rebel. Her sister's name is Sage. She has had it a little rough right from the beginning of her life, as she was born in the smoldering ashes of a wildfire. Rebel, her father, fled for help, promising to return.
Weak from birthing the twins, the lack of food after the fire, and distraught at the loss of her mate, Runner was only able to feed one of the foals. Nova, being the s-blocked-per of the pair, got what little milk their Mother had to give, while Sage eventually died of starvation.
Nova grew up hearing stories of her Father, but she never actually met her. Since it was her Mother telling most of these stories, she was always led to believe her Father was the absolute best of the best, leading her to be rather proud of him, despite never being able to meet him.
So, the two zebras set out on a journey to find a new home, but somewhere along the way Runner caught a sickness and soon perished, leaving her young filly to fend for herself. Usually, the youngster was helped by kind loners here and there, but sometimes she would come across a 'bully' and have to run away.
When she was just about fully grown, Nova was separated from her homeland when an angry lion (not a hungry one, mind you) chased her far, far away. Decided it was better just to keep moving, she came to the Deterahn desert, and witnessed part of her Father's death. On to the next adventure, eh?
