Flash crouched flat against the ground with his ears flat against his back. With the minimal cover that this area offered, his ability to fold his enormous legs and ears down into a huddled pile of fur was essential to escape the notice of predators. He could easily have fit underneath one of the small bushes that dotted the landscape, but hiding anywhere but plain sight was for rabbits and cowards. Not hares… especially the claustrophobic ones. Most were though. He raised his ears and rotated them in every direction, listening for any sign of a predator. His whiskers twitched and his legs quivered. All clear here. He leapt joyfully into the air, twisting in mid-jump to come down facing the opposite direction. As soon as his feet touched the ground he jumped again, bounding across the hillside like a miniature kangaroo.

As the thylacine quietly stalked the land, she was thankful that she was downwind. It would make it easier to find a meal, and, hopefully, save the poor critter that would soon be locked in her jaws from more fear and pain than need be. Needless to say, Katie still didn't like the idea of taking a life. It was something she had always hated, and may a time had she wished to be a different species of animal; one that did not have to kill to eat. At least is this place she could kill less and manage to eat some greens without it bothering her stomach.
The dog-like creature stopped as an pleasant smell drifted to her brown nose. She lifted her muzzle into the air and breathed in a few times, squinting from the wind. It was a.... rabbit? It was food. That was all she needed to know.
Scanning the land quickly with her warm, brown eyes, Katie saw nothing at first until, all of a sudden, she saw something leap into the air. She quickly trotted over to a near by bush and crouched down behind it. The bush was small, and didn't completely hide her from view, but it did a decent job.
Her eyes locked onto the small animal that she now identified as a hare, her muscles preparing to spring. She wasn't as close as she would have liked to be for her attack, but, luckily, tasmanian tigers, as her kind was also known, had great endurance.
Look at the poor thing.... She thought, regretting what she was going to do to this animal. It looks so happy, so playful.... Oh why oh why did I have to be born as a meat-eater; a killer. As the wind gusted and the hare's scent filled her nostrils, Katie's thoughts calmed for a few seconds before she came back to her normal senses. I'm sorry, little hare, she silently said in tribute to the creature who would soon have it's life spent.
Giving a powerful kick, the thylacine stood up and bolted off in the direction of the hare, taking long strides. Driven by hunger and instinct, regretful by individual nature. It was a maddening thing for the female. An endless war of great measure inside.

Flash paused for a moment, ears swivelling. What had made him stop? A smell? A sight? A sound? He looked all around, nose twitching, before shrugging and reaching for a tasty-looking clump of grass in front of him. Suddenly the thylacine leapt out and dashed towards him. He spun on the spot and bounded in the opposite direction, tearing the grass from its roots so that it hung from his mouth like some sort of moustache. Always when I'm just about to eat! Always! Why can't they wait till I'm done? He twisted his head around to see what exactly was chasing him. A dog? A dog. Cassandra's screams reverberated in his ears and he crouched low to the ground, running faster.

The hare bolted, as Katie knew it would, and she found herself half hoping it would out run her and get away with it's life. But it will still think of me as a monster, she added, feeling an icy shard of regret stabbing at her. She wished she could either learn to survive on plants or to get over feeling sorry for her dinners.
Already longing for the fight for life to be over, the thylacine ran faster, taking longer strides. She let her muzzle fall open so she could more easily take in the larger amount of oxygen that she needed to maintain her speed. Her paws practically flying over the ground, the marsupial could smell the hare's fear, but at the same time the smell of fresh meat.
Meat, she reminded herself. It's just meat. Don't think of it as a living being. Just a hunk of meat. He mental pep rally didn't do much. As the dread welled up in her heart again, she let out her frustration of what she was by means of anger. "I will catch you, little hare!" She barked, sounding much like a dog, her voice full of fury. "Just give up now, and I'll make things less painful!" It was a downright lie, as it would be coming from any other predator, only, in this case, a different kind of lie. No matter how angry or annoyed this animal made her, Katie would do her best to get rid of it quickly so it would not suffer.
