These rules are the code of conduct that all herd members should be taught as youngsters. There are seventeen different rules. Sometimes these rules are broken, either by necessity or foolishness, and those who break them can be punished as seen fit by the leaders.
Rule #1:
Every animal should defend the herd, even at the cost of their life.
Rule #2:
You should not trespass, hunt, or forage on another herd's territory. If they catch you, they then have permission to chase you off their land.
Rule #3:
Youngsters and the elderly should be fed first, and, unless they have special permission, adolescents cannot eat until the elderly have all been fed.
Rule #4:
Do not waste food. You should not purposely kill anything unless someone plans on eating it.
Rule #5:
Youngsters must first become adolescents in order to become an apprentice.
Rule #6:
New Warriors must sit a silent vigil, and watch over the herd while the others sleep. They cannot say a word, and must sit outside no matter what the weather is like, reflecting on Warrior responsibilities.
Rule #7:
An animal cannot become the deputy of the herd without having mentored at least one apprentice. Exceptions will be made for the first deputy of the herd.
Rule #8:
Should one or both the leaders of the herd die or retire, the deputy shall replace the corresponding leader. This means that if both leaders are alive and the male leader suddenly dies and the deputy is female, the deputy does not move up. However, if the deputy is male, he will take the male leader's place. Also, if there is only one leader, the deputy will take over no matter what gender.
Rule #9:
If the deputy dies or retires, the leader(s) must then choose a successor before midnight.
Rule #10:
Once every full moon, the herd must have a meeting. There shall be no fighting among them during this time.
Rule #11:
Herd boundaries must be checked and marked by patrols daily. Also, if a patrol finds a trespassing animal, they may chase them off of the territory.
Rule #12:
No herd member can ever ignore a youngster in pain or danger. This rule applies even if the youngster is from a different herd.
Rule #13:
The word of the herd leader(s) is law.
Rule #14:
An honorable animal does not kill in battle, unless the opposing animal is outside the laws of Amanija, or if they have to kill in self-defense.
Rule #15:
A herd member rejects the assistance of other herds unless completely necessary.
Rule #16:
A Medic is forbidden to take a mate or bear any young, as it distracts them greatly from their duties.
Rule #17:
Medics and Quartermasters must meet every half moon in order to keep track of the herd's herb supply.
